What advice would you give your younger self?
Balance your desire for important work and commitment with a focus on family and relationships; one cannot live without the other.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
Any place that includes a beach, sand and palm trees.

What made you want to pursue a career in nursing?
As a freshman in high school, I was unexpectedly hospitalized for five days; one nurse made the difference in my experience when she sat in my room and explained what was going on, what the test results revealed and what I could do to help myself. She was extraordinary - and different than all other care team members. When she left my room, with a, "I'll be here all night, let me know if you need anything" - I looked up to heaven and said - that's what I will do. I want to do for others what she just did for me. I'm going to be a Registered Nurse.

What book should every nurse read?
Team of Rivals, Doris Kearns Goodwin - a phenomenal book of leadership and presence in spite of immense conflict. Pretty important in today's United States!

What has been your most interesting/surprising outcome while conducting nursing research?
When you connect science with real-world issues that nurses confront on a daily basis - the learning is exponential and invigorating!

What is a fun fact many people may not know about you?
I met my wife of over 30 years during summer jobs at Cedar Point, an amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. We were both ride operators!
