Board Member Spotlight: Teri Murray

Teri Murray, Ph.D., PHNA-BC, RN, FAAN
Saint Louis University, Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing

What advice would you give your younger self?
Find an area of clinical interest in nursing that you are both passionate and curious about, further your education and experiential learning in the area. Become curious. Explore unanswered questions that you have or develop in that clinical area, join professional specialty organizations related to that area of focus, and pursue professional networks –all to enable you to become a subject matter expert.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
I have enjoyed many vacations in great places. I loved Vancouver, British Columbia; I also loved Barcelona. I would also have to include the Virgin Islands, Paris, I guess I would say it is hard to determine the most favorite vacation spot. Each place had something wonderful to offer.

What made you want to pursue a career in nursing?
I had an older sister who loved the 1970 television series, “Julia.” Julia was a registered nurse played by the recently deceased actress Diane Carroll. “Julia” was the first African American nurse seen on television. Seeing her in the role was inspirational for us. It made us feel, that we too, could also be nurses, and so it was!

What book should every nurse read?
Dentzer, S (Ed). (2018). Health care without walls: A roadmap for reinventing U.S. healthcare. NEHI.

What has been your most interesting/surprising outcome while conducting nursing research?
My research and policy interests are focused on the social determinants of health and the interplay between the social environment, the political environment, and health outcomes. Not surprising but interesting is the recognition that all policies affect health and the social justice advocacy and ethical commitment required to advocate on behalf of marginalized populations continuously. I had to become more actively engaged in the political and policy-making processes, working across sectors to advocate for policies that impact health. As a result, I am now a policy wonk.

What is a fun fact many people may not know about you?
I am an amateur landscape photographer.
