Board Member Spotlight: Dianne Morrison-Beedy

Dianne Morrison-Beedy, PhD, RN, FNAP, FAANP, FAAN
The Ohio State University College of Nursing

What advice would you give your younger self?
Early on in your career, create a balance between work and taking care of your health and your relationships. Make this your long-term habit. Realize that there are relatively few opportunities that are a "once in a lifetime" and even if you have to say "no" to something, it doesn't mean that another similar, or same, opportunity won't become available in your future. You do not have to say "YES" to everything right away and overwhelm your life. Lastly, remember the passion behind the start of your research and scholarship - it might be a patient, some challenge you or a loved one faced, or something that tugged at your heartstrings. Keep that front and center when times get tough and the work is dragging - remember WHY you chose this path and this focus!

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
Southern France - Provence to be exact. Besides the food, wine, culture, art (I could go on and on) it was the people I met who helped me understand my need for work-life balance that made me a "connoisseur" of fine and lovely life experiences.

What made you want to pursue a career in nursing?
I was critically-ill as a teen and I know that the people that got me through a long-term hospitalization were the nurses. I was sixteen when I was diagnosed with Guillian-Barre Syndrome, totally paralyzed and faced with a day-to-day of being unable to talk or move. Those nurses treated me with respect and made me take each day one at a time. I saw what nurses did and I wanted to give back in the same way.

What book should every nurse read?
Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People. The lessons learned about critical "people-skills" will be useful to nurses in their professional roles and personal lives. As they undertake their leadership journeys, nurses need to be able to develop allies, bring people on-board to new ideas, and garner enthusiasm for change.

What has been your most interesting/surprising outcome while conducting nursing research?
I developed an evidence-based CDC and DHSS recognized sexual risk reduction intervention for adolescents (The Health Improvement Project for Teens- HIPTeens). Even in 2022, I am always struck by how desperately teens still need, not only the information to reduce sexual risk, but the motivation and skills to do so. I hear constantly that this aspect of health is still not well addressed by healthcare, educational, or service communities yet teens so want to learn how to choose healthy relationships and behaviors. In addition, teens in the program keep me current and on-trend with the lifestyles, challenges, and hopes teens face each day I thank them for that because it makes HIPTeens relevant across different teen populations.

What is a fun fact many people may not know about you?
I am a decorating and travel magazine addict! Browsing through magazines is my respite (especially during covid when my travel has been somewhat curtailed).
